Lead Story: Pope Leo XIV Recovering After Lung Cancer Surgery

Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, had part of his right lung removed at Rome’s Gemelli hospital after a growth was found to be cancerous, AFP reported on our front page. The news rattled the Catholic Church: the 71-year-old was elected only last year, and Vatican watchers had expected a long papacy. Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle was set to celebrate a major Mass in St. Peter’s Square that the pope had been due to lead. Page A-1, continued on A-3.

Since press time: Leo was discharged from Gemelli on October 17 and held his general audience in St. Peter’s Square on October 21. Doctors said the cancer, an adenocarcinoma removed in the October 13 operation, was localized and needs no further treatment. As a precaution, he canceled an October 27 helicopter trip to Assisi. His November 6–17 visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru is still planned, pending his recovery. Sources: La Voce di New York, Catholic News Service.
